Common Causes of Employee Disengagement

Uninteresting or dull training sessions

While continuing education in the office is important for all employees – new or seasoned – it is also vital to keep these training sessions interesting. If not, it could cause employees to become disengaged in general.

Companies are using innovative and exciting ways to train their employees these days, one of them being eLearning that takes advantage of gamification. This allows employees to accrue points through successful training modules.

This could be something appealing and exciting for employees, as TalentLMS reported that a recent survey uncovered that 89 percent of learners said a point system in training would boost their engagement overall.


A lack of teamwork

While it is important for employees to feel confident and comfortable working independently, it is also vital for teammates to work together, too, in order to stay engaged.

A lack of internal interaction could prompt disengagement around the office. To avoid the tendency for people to feel isolated, encourage teamwork as a way to work on projects and initiatives, solve problems, and to work towards innovation.

Working in a group setting is a proven way to help employees feel encouraged as well as motivated to engage.

Lack of information or difficulty finding information

When it’s difficult or flat-out impossible for employees to find answers to their questions, it could cause them to be disengaged. Not being able to find necessary information to do their job is bound to create cause for frustration and irritation, which are both killers of motivation.

In order to avoid this problem, ensure that you are not providing employees with manuals or resources that include “one size fits all” directions or information. Make instructions concise and specific.

Also, make it known that employees are welcomed and encouraged to ask managers and superiors for additional information when needed. Finally, encourage teammates to work together to find answers through forums and well-documented procedures.

Employees should know that they need not waste excessive time searching for answers, as it is demoralizing and unproductive.
